Welcome to endsongs

Part of Mark's Guitar collection can be accessed online.
Sometimes he has guitars for sale.

In the music library there is music from the mid-1970's, the early 1980's, the late 1990's and recent music.

Recordings of suitable performances of endsongs2 and the Endsongs Freejazz Duo are available for download in the Music Library. Also, due to the nature of improvised music, rehearsals can produce extraordinary performances. These may be added as well if they are deemed to be suitable

Mark Macpherson has an online diary. It is updated very occasionally. It may be mildly interesting. Mostly not.

Rehearsals, Oct. 2006

Endsongs is improvised music. It's the jazz philosophy which doesn't mean it sounds like traditional jazz music. The current incarnations of endsongs (named after much intellectual endeavour - endsongs2) is one gentleman playing an electric guitar, with many electrical devices and a MacBook with Ableton Live and another gentleman playing electrified percussion. The Endsongs Freejazz Duo is acoustic percussion and an amplified (with no effects) Gibson Archtop (from Mark's Guitar Collection).

Endsongs2 has moments where there is subtlety and, even, silence and other moments that cause the audience to wonder where the other four members playing sustained electric guitar are hiding and if they are standing infront of or behind the percussion ensemble and, also, where the orchestra pit is situated.

Endsongs2 music is not ambient, not jazz, not experimental, not avant-garde and not progressive. It is a mixture of these styles that, due to its improvised nature, is different with each performance.

The Endsongs Freejazz Duo is at the opposite end of the technology spectrum. No effects. A guitar, an amplifier and acoustic drums. The Endsongs Freejazz Duo have been likened to a mixture of indian classical music, "traditional" free jazz and Bach.

Mr Bashford and Mr Macpherson, together, bring to endsongs the experience of over fifty-five years of playing live music.

Our music is very exciting for the performers and it can be for a listening audience. Some times it doesn't work and at other times I don't know where such sublime music comes from. I have no ownership over this music (other than legal and copyright, of course) and when I listen to recordings of performances I am hearing them as if for the first time.

Sometimes, during a performance of Endsongs2, myself and/or Mr Bashford may be not playing but are listening to the music, thus far created, unfold in unexpected ways. It is a new experience to be, simultaneously, performer and audience member.

It all started in the mid-1970's, well, really twenty years before that... Read more

We are trying out the bittorrent service provided by the bittorrent web site. This is so we can provide larger files for download all in one piece. We have a user area on that site where the torrents of our larger files can be downloaded. For help and advice on torrrents please check the bittorrent web site (I assure you it is easy to install and run - but check their web site for help and advice). There will be direct links to download the (small) torrent files from this web site but when you get around to downloading the music files please be patient, they will be large (eg 30-50MB).
